Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum has played an important role in the early growth of St. Louis. It is the final resting place of many historical figures from William Clark to Adolphus Busch. It was established in 1849 and it is a Level II Accredited Arboretum, set in 314 acres and is listed in the Morton Register of Arboreta. Though a historically significant cemetery, Bellefontaine is still active as a final place of rest. Currently Bellefontaine is the only area cemetery with Green Burial options.
Its Gardening mission is to support and enhance the cemetery as a place of perpetual commemoration and as a garden of beauty and historical significance.
